Ese conteo me recordó un capítulo de Perfect From Now On de John Sellers, libro muy simpático que narra el inicio, florecimiento y eventual obsesión de un chico sencillo oriundo de Michigan con el indie rock (sus palabras, no las mías). Hoy es colaborador habitual de GQ y el NYT.
Como buen devoto de Joy Division, The Smiths y New Order, trabaja duro todo un verano de 1990 para cumplir su sueño de conocer Manchester. Transcribo algunas partes:
But something entirely personal was fueling my trip abroad: I needed to conduct three distinct pilgrimages. They were, in order of importance: 1) To find the grave of Ian Curtis; 2) to stand in front of the Salford Lads Club, outside of which the Smiths memorably posed in a photo taken for the sleeve of The Queen is Dead; and 3) to see the interior of the Hacienda, the club owned by New Order.

My initial reaction to Manchester: That's it? We drove through the ugly, drab, deserted downtown area and I silently fumed. Where was the sign saying THE SMITHS WALKING TOUR BEGINS HERE? Where was the city's version of Mt. Rushmore, featuring the craggy faces of local heroes Ian Curtis, Morrissey, the Buzzcocks's Pete Shelley, and the Fall's Mark E. Smith? I all but needed Johnny Marr, Bernard Summer, and the Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder to be weaving at us from the middle of a roundabout as we pulled in.

When the haggard bartender informed us that there would be an open-mike event later in the evening, I got my first sense that not everyone in Manchester cared about the music the city has produced. Excited, I asked him if anyone at previous open mikes had ever played any Joy Division.
"Who?" he asked.
Seguramente ese bartender ya murió o no votó en la encuesta.
A título personal, me encantó que la segunda canción de Oasis presente en esa lista fuera Slide Away. Yay!
